Moon…is your loyal and constant companion! Moon is the Earth’s only natural satellite and loyally follows the Earth as they both orbit the Sun.

I am the Earth’s only natural satellite. I am held in orbit by a mutual attraction to Earth’s gravity. Ocean tides are a direct result of my gravitational forces pulling on the Earth.

I was created when Earth was impacted by a massive object at the beginning of the Universe. The expelled material formed me! The half million craters on my surface were created by impacting meteors and asteroids. I don’t emit my own light. It is the Sun’s rays reflecting off my face that produce my brightness. My orbital and rotational periods are the same, so people on Earth can only see one side of me.  Sometimes, my orbit takes me directly between the Earth and the Sun, causing a solar eclipse and plunging parts of the world into total darkness . . .but only for a few minutes.

I am the only celestial body that Earthlings have visited. . . so far:   Mars . . .you may be next!

Our Planet, Our Responsibility. A Message to Parents and Educators:

Our Precious Planet is a larger (nine inch diameter) more detailed version of Earth designed to help start a conversation about climate change and global warming. Consistent with our mission to both enlighten and delight, this Special Edition Buddy is a gentle introduction to a very complicated but also very important subject.

We at Celestial Buddies understand that there are many factors that contribute to climate change, but we are concerned enough about the human contribution to global warming that we believe that, as an educational toy company, we should give families and educators a tool to help promote healthy discussions with our children about this important issue. Like all the other Celestial Buddies, Our Precious Planet comes with an educational hang tag that provides useful introductory information about our planet and climate change. It also includes a colorful supplemental tag that illustrates some of the causes and effects of global warming, as well as some suggestions about what individual human beings, including children and their parents, can do to help.

Is extraterrestrial life out there? Although the search continues, we have found no evidence of any other planet with such an amazing variety of living things and ecosystems as Our Precious Planet, so let’s not take it for granted. Earth was formed 4.53 billion years ago; the earliest forms of life appeared at least 3.5 billion years ago; and we people . . . homo sapiens . . . have been living here for only around 200,000 years. Although the Earth’s climate can change gradually over time, human activities, such as industry, deforestation, pollution and urban development, have speeded up the pace of climate change and are increasing the amount of global warming, which can lead to melting glaciers, rising sea levels, extreme weather and species extinctions.

Earth needs our help now! How can YOU help? Recycle bottles, cans, plastic, & paper. Turn off water and electricity when not in use. Drink filtered tap water and carry it in reusable bottles. Ask your parents to buy reusable grocery bags. Plant a tree or a garden. Walk or ride a bike when you can. Don't litter. Learn all you can about our environment, and please take good care of Our Precious Planet!

I am on the fast track!

Mercury…is on the fast track! Mercury is the smallest and also the fastest planet in the Solar System.

I am the closest planet to the Sun and am named after the messenger to the Roman Gods, whose speed was enhanced by his winged sandals. (Personally, I prefer winged sneakers!) I am the fastest planet in the Solar System, flying around the Sun in a mere 88 days. I race through space at 30 miles per second, outpacing the Earth, who clocks in at just 19 miles a second.  Although I am the smallest planet in the Solar System, my large iron core makes me the second heaviest, only slightly lighter than Earth.

Although I am the closest planet to the Sun, I am actually not the hottest . . .that honor belongs to Venus with her heat-trapping atmosphere.  I'm very hot on the side that faces the Sun, but the other side is always more than 200 degrees below zero!

My appearance is similar to the Earth’s Moon, for I am heavily cratered, lack an atmosphere and have no natural satellites.

I am a smoldering hottie!

Venus…is a smoldering hottie! Venus has the highest surface temperature of any planet in our Solar System due to thick clouds that trap in heat.

I’m so pretty! But while you can look, you had better not touch!

Named after the Roman Goddess of Love and Beauty, I am the brightest object in the night sky (except the Moon).  Earth is my twin in terms of size and it is closer to me than to any other Planet, but that is where our similarities end: I am the only planet to rotate backwards, and very slowly, so a Venusian day lasts longer than my year! An atmosphere made mostly of carbon dioxide traps heat and makes me the hottest planet in the Solar System. more than 800 degrees F.  I’m hot enough to melt lead!

I am a ruddy Buddy and a friendly neighbor!

Mars…is a ruddy Buddy and a friendly neighbor! Mars, the red planet, is named after the Roman God of War, but he is a lover, not a fighter. This guy is one friendly Martian!

I am the fourth planet from the Sun and your nearest planetary neighbor. I can pass as close as 35 million miles away from you. My most distinctive characteristic is my rusty red color caused by iron rich minerals in my rocks. When viewed from space, the only areas not red are the white patches at my poles . . . my polar ice caps . . . frozen all year round. I am named after the Roman God of War because my red color is reminiscent of blood. But don’t worry; I’m a peace loving, friendly Martian!

My day is just a few minutes longer than yours, but while Earth has one Moon, I have two. Deimos and Phobos are very small and orbit very close to my surface, Deimos  is only about 3700 miles away and takes just 8 hours  to orbit me.  Phobos is further away, and its orbit takes 30 hours.  Your Moon. on the other hand, takes an entire month to orbit the Earth!
